Facts About Bora Bora

Bora Bora is shaped by its volcanic origins, Polynesian heritage and unusual geography, with a mountainous main island surrounded by a lagoon, reef and small motus.

  • Bora Bora is more than its lagoon. Its volcanic past, Polynesian roots and unusual island layout explain much of what visitors see today.

  • The name Bora Bora is derived from the Tahitian word pōpora, meaning “first born”.

  • Its volcanic beginnings are difficult to miss. Mount Otemanu, around 727 metres high, still towers over almost every view.

  • Over on the western coast, Vaitape is the island’s main town and the centre of everyday local life.

  • Water shapes almost everything here: the main island sits inside a lagoon, with small motu scattered around the reef.

  • Even the airport is offshore. Flights land on Motu Mute, and passengers continue their journey across the lagoon by boat.

  • That geography also explains why so many resorts sit on separate motu rather than on Bora Bora’s main island.

Tips for Visiting Bora Bora

A little planning goes a long way in Bora Bora, particularly when it comes to island transfers, the best time to visit, spending money and choosing how long to stay.

  • Getting to Bora Bora usually means flying into Papeete first, then taking a short domestic connection.

  • The airport sits on Motu Mute, away from the main island, so arrivals continue by boat.

  • May through October is usually drier, while April and November can be quieter and sometimes better value.

  • The CFP franc is the local currency, although cards work well at most resorts and tourist businesses.

  • Four or five days work well for a shorter stay; a week leaves much more room to slow down.

  • Water shoes are genuinely useful around coral, and reef-safe sunscreen deserves plenty of space in the suitcase.

  • A universal adaptor is handy, as plug types and voltage can vary across French Polynesia.

What to Pack

Pack with warm weather, lagoon activities and tropical conditions in mind, with useful essentials such as water shoes, sun protection and a suitable travel adaptor.

Travel Advice & Safety

Bora Bora is generally straightforward for UK travellers, but sensible precautions around valuables, water activities, mosquitoes, weather and travel insurance are still important.

Is it Safe to Travel to Bora Bora?

Bora Bora is usually an easy place for UK travellers to navigate, although normal holiday precautions still apply. Quiet beaches are best avoided after dark, valuables should stay secure, and reputable operators matter for diving and lagoon trips. Good travel insurance is worth having before setting off.

Key Safety Considerations

  • Beaches: Quiet and isolated stretches are best avoided after dark, particularly when valuables or expensive jewellery are being carried.

  • Valuables: Passports, spare cash and important documents are better left in the hotel safe when they are not needed.

  • Diving: Before going underwater, divers should check the operator’s credentials, equipment, emergency oxygen and any insurance conditions.

  • Emergencies: French Polynesia’s only hyperbaric chamber is in Papeete, so a serious diving accident may involve an emergency transfer.

  • Mosquitoes: Dengue and chikungunya occur in French Polynesia, making repellent and other mosquito protection sensible throughout the trip.

  • Insurance: Cover should include medical care, evacuation and any diving, water sports or adventure activities planned during the stay.

  • Weather: Tropical storms and cyclones are more likely between November and April, so forecasts are worth following closely.

Local Laws and Culture

  • Entry: French Polynesia sets its own entry rules, so travellers should check immigration, customs and health requirements before leaving.

  • Driving: British visitors hiring a car should carry their UK licence along with a 1968 International Driving Permit.

  • Customs: Restricted goods, taxable items and certain amounts of cash must be declared when entering or leaving.

  • Tipping: It is not expected in Bora Bora, though a small tip for particularly good service is perfectly acceptable.

  • Language: French is the official language; Tahitian is widely spoken, and English is common around hotels and tourist areas.

  • Greetings: Simple Tahitian words such as Ia Ora Na and Mauruuru are an easy, friendly way to acknowledge local culture.

  • Tradition: The Hei Upo’o flower crown is worn for welcomes, celebrations and sometimes simply as part of everyday island life.
