Things to do in
New York
Statue of Liberty

Perhaps the most internationally recognisable statue in the world, the Statue of Liberty is a feat of human ingenuity that has to be seen to be believed.

The notorious monument has pride of place in New York Harbour and visitors can either admire the statue from afar (it is big enough after all) or hop on a ferry to Liberty Island and get an up-close view of the gargantuan statue. For the full experience, though, we recommend combining a trip to Liberty Island with a visit to nearby Ellis Island, as both are now part of a national monument.

Central Park

Featured in a myriad of films and television shows and brimming with a wondrous array of activities for all visitors, we bet no one told you a trip to Central Park was going to be this way.

Explore this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Centre for yourself and get lost in the wonderland that is Central Park. Start your day with an invigorating yoga class, take a walking tour, cycle around the lush trails, soak up the New York summer sunshine, visit the zoo, or show off your skills at the year-round ice rink. These are just a few of the exciting options available at this infamous park.

Sight Seeing

With a number of New York City’s most famous landmarks all within walking distance of one another, no trip to this cultural labyrinth would be complete without a walking tour of all the must-see buildings.

From vibrant and bustling Times Square to the colossal Empire State Building, the extravagant Chrysler Building (King Kong not included) to the epic Madison Square Garden and, of course, not forgetting the iconic Rockefeller Centre. With an array of hotspots bound to leave you breathless, get the selfie stick and your vagabond shoes; leave the rest up to old New York.

New York is home to no less than 40 theatres, all displaying an eclectic range of magnificent shows, there’s something to amaze everyone on Broadway.

Featuring classic internationally-renowned titles such as Disney’s The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera and Jersey Boys, as well as newer musicals such as Dear Evan Hansen, School of Rock and Anastasia, a theatre trip on Broadway is a guaranteed evening of show-stopping entertainment for guests of all ages. It’s not all about the musicals, though, as there are a whole host of plays, dance performances and multi-sensory experiences, we’re sure you’ll find your very own slice of exhilaration.

Take a trip to the Lower East Side of New York and find yourself transported to the other side of the world. Brimming with authentic street food, exquisite restaurants and trinket stalls, it’s no wonder why Chinatown remains such a wildly popular tourist hotspot.

Indulge with an endless assortment of dumplings, noodles and dim sum, visit the incredible Columbus Park to get a feel for the diversity of the neighbourhood, and discover sweet and savoury Chinese treats at Aji Ichiban, the store that locals have nicknamed Munchies Paradise. We also recommend trying authentic bubble milk tea at the infamous Kung Fu Tea in downtown Manhattan!

Little Italy

Though this sliver of Italy is small, it is still mighty. Spanning just 3 blocks and jam-packed with all the Italian authenticity you could want, this is definitely a must-see while visiting New York.

Begin on Mulberry Street, which has been immortalised in films such as ‘The Godfather’ and begin your tour through the historical streets that thousands of Italian immigrants made home. Admire the remarkable street art and have your pick of delicious, authentic Italian cuisine, and take a trip to NoLita, which is the high-end part of the neighbourhood, home to upscale boutiques and restaurants, as well as a few choice celebrities.

Brooklyn Bridge

Yet another impressive demonstration of man’s pioneering ingenuity, this time from one of the oldest roadway bridges in the United States. Spanning an impressive 1,800 metres and offering magnificent, unique views of the city, the crossing from Brooklyn to Manhattan couldn’t get much more pleasant.

Taking around an hour to cross (including stopping to admire the stunning surroundings, of course), this bridge sits majestically above New York’s East River. Now over 125 years old, and still standing strong, the bridge remains a popular tourist destination, thanks to its historical information points and staggering features.

New York Shopping

You weren’t going to visit one of the fashion capitals of the world and not leave with a whole new wardrobe were you. We didn’t think so.

With renowned department stores like Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, as well as the glamorous Fifth Avenue scene, New York City is a shopper’s paradise. Infamous Tiffany’s, the world’s largest Apple Store, as well as Saks, Armani, Bulgari, Cartier and Versace, to name just a few, all gracing one avenue, you’ll feel like a glam fashion icon as you peruse the luxurious collections.

The Museum of Modern Art

While most will agree that the city of New York is a masterpiece in and of itself, for art lovers who wish to see some of the most world-renowned artistic masterpieces ever created, you need look no further than the infamous Museum of Modern Art.

Home to pieces from Van Gogh and Warhol, the exhibitions displayed here truly are one of a kind. From classic paintings to contemporary photography, artists’ creations from all over the world are curated to create awe-inspiring exhibitions. Containing more than 200,000 works of modern and contemporary art, it’s no surprise that this is one of the most popular Museums worldwide.

New York Food

In an age long debate, people have argued whether it is the sandwich or pizza that rules the roost of this food-obsessed city. Since we couldn’t settle the argument, we figured we’d just take both.

Sandwiches and New York go together like breakfast and Tiffany’s, and the very best ones can be found at Katz’s Deli in the Lower East Side, whose specially cured meats will melt in your mouth. And when your taste buds have recovered from this amorous assault, you can sock it to them again with New York’s best authentic Italian pizza, which you’ll find at SottoCasa. You’re welcome
