Tahitians’ are known globally for their acceptance and chilled attitude. The most commonly used phrase you will hear on a trip here is “Aita pe’a pe’a” which translates, not surprisingly, into English as “no problem”. The island offers everything you could want from a luxurious break in paradise, beautiful beaches, to the top end hotels and the kind of kitschy shopping options you would never dream of considering at home but which seems so normal abroad.
The first thing you will notice at the local markets is that on every corner are shops selling pearls. They are very reasonably priced; haggling in a Turkish bazaar selecting pearls from the piles on offer is considered a prerequisite of visiting Tahiti. This is a daunting task but is just one of those unique things you simply have to do as the opportunity is so rare. This one act sums up Tahiti perfectly; unique, beautiful and a must do.
For accommodation the options are positively endless. At one end of the scale you have the luxurious resorts which offer the heady combination of being a whole lot of fun and the chance to kick back and relax like you have never before. The suites at these resorts are ridiculously oversized which just adds to the pleasure. They will often include kitchen, even though the resort is all inclusive, enormous living areas and bathrooms of the calibre that make you blink to ensure you aren’t imagining it.
Things to Do
In terms of things to do in Tahiti there is so much included within the resorts that if you have no real wish to go exploring you have everything on tap. However, it must be said that those who do this are missing out on the chance to enjoy the most exquisite tropical landscape. The vibrancy of the colours offers the kind of photo opportunities which come along extremely rarely
Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia and is located on Tahiti and ferries run from here to several of the islands in the archipelago. If you manage to drag yourself out of your resort, we recommend that you spend that day on the neighbouring island of Moorea, a mere 30 minute ferry ride away. This island is renowned for its outdoor adventure activities and the spectacular scenery is the perfect backdrop for jumping into lagoons or paddle boarding.
There are many resort hotels located in Moorea and the savvy traveller will make their trip south a twin-center by staying a week in Tahiti then a week in Moorea, or vice versa. If you have tried snorkelling, scuba diving or kayaking then there really is nowhere better to make your maiden foray into these popular sports and the best bit is they are actually on offer within many of the island’s luxury resorts.
If you want to see the entire island and not just your, albeit expansive, resort then a jeep tour is highly recommended. The viewpoints from the highest areas of the island offer a vista that cannot be described in mere words and even breath-taking seems insufficient. There is always something new that you spot in a tropical landscape, be it an exotic flower or bird, and your senses are well and truly assaulted by the sights, sounds and fragrances of this little heaven on earth.
Moorea resorts offer those over-the-water bungalows most associated with this part of the world and if you have the chance to stay in one they offer an unforgettable experience. There are also a plethora of garden level bungalows should you wish to remain on terra firma but both options have 2 things in common; size and luxury. You have to be in one yourself to really appreciate this and an added touch of luxury is the glorious dipping pool installed in the garden of each bungalow.
Which travellers will Tahiti and Moorea most appeal to?
While the resorts cater to everyone from the singletons to families who want that extra touch of luxury in a holiday; this part of the world is most associated with weddings and honeymoons. Several resorts have private beaches on which you can take your vows in the most superb setting. The entire day is designed to be the most romantic you will ever spend and the long flight is more than made up for by the most important day of your life becoming the most unforgettable for the happy couple and guests alike.
