One example of the island's beautiful landscapes is the stunning Chamarel Waterfall within the Black River Gorges National Park. This magnificent waterfall is the highest on the island and plunges more than 85 metres down into the gorge below. Its beauty lies in the waterfalls’ three unmistakable streams that fall from the St Denis River. The surrounding National park makes this a great day out for the family, with trails winding through the forests and mountains. The park is famous for the seven-coloured earth, which is an area of land that has been stained by volcanic minerals. Lucky visitors may be able to spot the local monkeys, but be careful not to leave your belongings unattended!
Alternatively the island is a great place to enjoy some thrilling water sports experiences. One of the most popular is Parasailing but the island plays host to a wide array of water sports including Water Skiing, Sea Kayaking, Jet Ski, Windsurfing and many, many, more. For a kid-friendly and educational experience, a trip to the Natural History Museum will provide a great family day out. The museum is split into four galleries called Fauna, Marine Life, Insects, Meteorology and Giant Tortoise and The World of the Dodo. There are many fascinating exhibits within all four galleries, but the highlights are the Jurassic Period, ‘Dinosaur Bird’ fossil and the skeleton of the Dodo, the famous extinct bird of Mauritius.
For a truly spectacular nature walk, the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Garden is one of the best botanical gardens in the world. Named after Mauritius’ first prime minister after gaining independence, this huge garden has no maps and there are so many plants that many of them are not labelled. It is highly recommended to hire one of the knowledgeable guides as inexperienced visitors could easily miss many of the intriguing species. The most famous sight is the central pond filled with Giant Victoria Amazonica Water Lilies. There is also plenty of wildlife including Giant Tortoises and a vast array of birdlife.
The Mauritius Casela Park is a wonderful family day out including four themed worlds, Safari, Nature, Mountain and Water. Safari kingdom will take families on an adventure with a Photo-Safari tour and dedicated areas for Big Cats, Elephants and Giraffes. Nature Kingdom is a tour through the beautiful bird and canopy parks and shows off some spectacular animal shows. If you still have some energy left then Mountain and Water have a range of fun activities including Toboggan rides, zip lines, climbing walls and a wave pool.
For a unique cultural experience, families can visit the historic Domaine Les Pailles Colonial Sugar Estate, just 10 minutes from the capital of Port Louis. This one time sugar estate has now been turned into an interesting theme park and is spread over a huge area of 3000 acres. It is a perfect trip for either a full or half day as there is plenty to see and do including the 18th century sugar mill, colonial horse carriages, museums and ride the beautiful Lady Alice steam train. For the adults, there is also Rum tasting and a wide range of restaurants serving both traditional and French cuisine.
Tamarin bay is the perfect destination for those who are looking to witness some magnificent marine creatures as dolphins can often be spotted close by. There are also opportunities to take boat trips out to sea to watch and swim with them. Aside from the dolphins, Tamarin Bay has a fantastic beach which is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the sound of the lapping ocean.
