The One&Only Reethi Rah is one of our handpicked favourites!
If you ever get the chance to hop on a seaplane, I strongly suggest doing so. The Maldives shines brightest from above, and the first thing I was absolutely captivated by was how beautifully blue the ocean was, it was so bright and crystal clear that it was almost like something out of a dream. As I stepped off the seaplane and felt the bright Maldivian sun warm my face, I couldn’t help but break out into a smile when I saw the resort that lay before me. If the perfect honeymoon in the Maldives exists, I’m sure it’s right here.
The One&Only Reethi Rah sits along one of the largest private islands in the Maldives’ historic North Malé Atoll, and it was easily one of the most beautiful 5-star resorts I had ever seen. In the distance I could see endless stretches of pure white sands, gorgeous overwater bungalows made of dark wood and emerald foliage punctuated with swaying palm trees. I was greeted with the gift of a colourful Lei made of exotic flowers, a refreshing drink and warm smiles from all of the management team who already knew me by name and welcomed me to their beautiful resort.
As the staff handed us refreshingly cold towels and took care of our luggage, the chef came out and personally assured myself and my partner that our dietary requirements had been noted, and that every meal will be perfectly catered to our needs. The management team then informed me that because I had been unable to choose between their gorgeous Beach and Water Villas, that they I would be spending the first half of my visit in the Water Villa with Pool and my second half in the Beach Villa with Pool. I knew right there and then that this was going to be the perfect Maldives honeymoon!
Following a relaxing buggy ride along the blissful coastline, we arrived at our Maldives Water Villa and I couldn’t believe my eyes. The most beautiful mahogany and thatch-roofed bungalow stood before me, sitting on stilts above the turquoise lagoon below. The host gave us a toothy grin and handed us the key, like this villa was our new home! I looked at my partner and he nodded with a smile, signalling that I should be the one to open the doors to this Maldives honeymoon haven.
The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the huge king-sized bed that seemed to be calling out for me, but as soon as I saw the incredible ocean view through the huge floor-to-ceiling sliding doors, I threw my handbag and sunglasses onto the bed and headed for the terrace. As I walked out onto the private terrace, I found a gorgeous outdoor cabana fitted with the most comfortable-looking daybed I’d ever seen, and next to that was a sparkling infinity-edge swimming pool which I knew was where I’ll be watching the sunset from later on.
Once we were all settled in ands had firmly decided this was going to be the best Maldives honeymoon ever, the first thing I did was run a hot bath and indulge in a soak as I took in the endless lagoon views. As I felt the warm sea breeze drift through the huge window, all I could hear was the soothing sounds of the waves lapping the sands, and I couldn’t wait to see how the first day of our honeymoon in our Maldives Water Villa could get any better.
Feeling refreshed and ready to explore the resort, my partner and I reluctantly left our beautiful villa to find out what else the One&Only Reethi Rah had in store for us. We wandered through an outcrop of delicately perfumed tropical flowers until we came across the Beach Club and realised we were actually a little bit hungry, and I think the staff must have known because we were handed two colourful cocktails the instant we arrived!
We sat down with our feet in the sand and enjoyed some absolutely incredible Latin American-inspired dishes, my favourite was the mouth-watering Calamari & Pico de Gallo dish which was comprised of succulent squid tossed in mild chilis; delicious. After that, we happened upon a beautiful stone-carved pool overlooking the ocean waters that looked so mesmerising and so naturally integrated with the landscape that it could have been here since the day this island was discovered.
This adults-only lap pool was where I spent the rest of the afternoon; working on my tan, relaxing in the built-in jacuzzi, racing laps against my partner (and winning, obviously) and getting him to snap the perfect Instagram picture of us along the pool’s edge, with the endless Indian Ocean behind us. If I could sum up how beautiful this pool is, I would use the words ‘Honeymoon gold.’
The One&Only are world-renowned for their absolutely incredible spa experiences, and I knew my Maldives honeymoon would be incomplete without a visit to Reethi Rah’s spa.The spa itself is hidden away from the rest of the resort, nestled within lush manicured gardens punctuated by idyllically swaying palms and fragranced flowers. As I arrived I took in the beautiful ocean view and the noted the beautiful swirling vitality pools, crystal steam rooms and inviting Watsu pool.
I was greeted by a friendly member of their team who listened to my concerns and advised me that one of their signature treatments would be perfect for me. I could feel my shoulders drop and the problems that once troubled me slip away with every motion of the Unwind Signature Experience, I challenge anyone to not feel truly transformed after their glow-revealing body scrub and volcanic hot stone massage. Bliss. Pair this with enchanting views of the Indian Ocean waters and the soothing sounds of the lagoon waters lapping the soft sands, and I can completely understand why people travel across the world for this experience alone, it’s incomparable.
Feeling refreshed and truly relaxed, me and my partner slowly strolled back to our Water Villa and when we opened the doors I was completely taken aback! Our terrace had been decorated with the most beautiful flickering candles, and the table was all set up for a romantic meal for two with front row seats to the Maldivian sunset. I enjoyed the most delicious homemade pasta dish I’d ever had outside of Italy, and we both clinked our wine glasses as the sun disappeared behind the horizon, revealing a sky full of twinkling stars. As we sat together and took in the dazzling view, I couldn’t help but wonder how the second half of this luxurious Maldives honeymoon could get any better, but The Maldives is always full of wonderful surprises.
After bidding farewell to our beautiful Water Villa, we were led by our friendly resort representative to our next accommodation, which they happily told us was a firm favourite for honeymooners and couples because of how exclusive it was; perfect. We soon arrived at an absolutely beautiful villa nestled within a gorgeous outcrop of tall tropical trees, hidden from the rest of the resort. Although the interiors of the villa were equally as beautiful as the overwater bungalow’s offering, what lay before the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors was beyond amazing.
I stepped out onto the terrace and found two glasses and a chilled bottle of white wine waiting for us, but what really excited me was the huge private pool that sat just footsteps from our bed! As my partner poured me a glass so we could toast our second ‘first night’ in the Maldives, I wandered beyond the gorgeous swimming pool to a clearing in the trees, which opened up onto a stretch of gorgeous pure white sands. I immediately kicked off my shoes and sat down on the soft sands while I waited for my partner to join me, and as I gazed upon the endless Indian Ocean I just couldn’t believe that all of this was ours and we were now on a beach holiday on our own pristine and untouched private beach.
After spending these last few days of the luxury honeymoon relaxing by the pools and indulging the One&Only’s incredible spa treatments, I decided it was time for a change of pace. I knew that this gorgeous island was home to some of the most beautiful and peaceful lagoon waters in the world, and the resort offers a fantastic selection of water sports facilities that really showcase this, but I was more interested in what dwelled beneath the surface.
The most enchanting underwater wonderland of beautiful coral reefs and marine life was just waiting to be discovered, so we donned our very attractive scuba diving suits and headed for the ocean. As I swam through the crystal clear warm waters through schools of tiny colourful fishes, I suddenly came up close with a group of absolutely mesmerising manta rays as they gracefully floated through the ocean. I was blown away by how incredible they looked up close and how dreamlike it felt to swim alongside these spectacular creatures, I never realised how huge they were in real life! As I waved them goodbye and saw them disappear into the vast deep blue expanse, I knew that this was an experience I would never, ever forget.
For one of our final nights, we wanted a truly authentic Maldivian experience that would stay with us forever, and the One&Only took care of everything. We were lead by one of their attentive representatives to the powder-soft coastline where we were met by the most spectacular wooden Dhoni boat I had ever seen, it was like something from back when we were explorers discovering the Maldives!
Our lovely captain made sure we were comfortable before setting sail across the serene bright blue waters, and I don’t think I’ve ever felt more relaxed in my entire life. As we sliced along the beautiful ocean waters, I could feel the warm Maldivian sun on my face and the sea breeze in my hair, and our captain told us wonderful tales of the Maldives' rich history and how so many of these little islets remained uninhabited. We enjoyed sparkling conversations paired with sparking wine and canapés while we watched the sunset cast incredible shades of orange and pink into the newly night sky.
Soon after, we arrived on what must have been the world’s tiniest sand bank island surrounded by gentle turquoise waters, which our captain told us was our own private island for the evening. Set before me was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen; a table set for two on the soft white sands, surrounded by romantic candles and flickering lanterns with two glasses of red wine already poured, waiting for us. Our chef prepared the most mouth-watering selection of grilled dishes and vegetables that I had ever had, and all I could do was bask in the beauty of this pristine private island and the incredible views of the starry night sky reflected in the ocean waters. It was at that point that I knew I would never, ever forget this incredible luxury Maldives honeymoon, and how for that one moment in time, it felt like we were the only two people in the whole world.
The Maldives experiences beautiful hot weather all year round thanks to it's location near the equator. With this tropical location comes the chance of rain at any point throughout the year, with a higher chance from May to October, however this is likely to clear up very quickly and be replaced by the sun in no time. Rain or shine, the Maldives is always a hot and beautiful place to visit.
